A social housing development in Bunbury has been given the green light, despite concerns from neighbouring residents and businesses.

The Bunbury City Council approved AccordWest’s application to build four social housing units at its Forrest Avenue location, which will be used to cater for young families.

A second stage – which needs separate approval – could include transitional accommodation for teenagers at the site.

A petition signed by 106 people was filed opposing the development while a further 28 objections were submitted and nearby business Rando and Associates director Mark Rando presented a deputation at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Mr Rando said while there was a need for more social housing in Bunbury, the proposed location was not appropriate.

Stating he was speaking on behalf of a group of people, Mr Rando said the development did not meet State planning policies and it would affect the amenity of the area.

The deputation prompted Mayor Gary Brennan to seek clarification during the meeting from council officers that the development did comply and he was told it did.

AccordWest chief executive officer Neil Hamilton also presented a deputation to the council saying the organisation’s due diligence had been completed and a vote in favour of the development would “reflect how this council supports what it means to be MARCIA” (Most Accessible Regional City in Australia).

Mr Rando told theSouth Western Times the council decision was disappointing and the group would be contacting the Housing Minister.

“As a group we are stridently pro-social housing, but not where it will impact on the future residents and community at large because a development is poorly planned,” Mr Rando said.

Mr Hamilton said yesterday the organisation came away from the decision “very encouraged” and offered residents who may still have concerns to meet with him.
