Bunbury City Council could spend thousands of dollars on a report to entice hotel developers to build in the city.

Chief executive officer Andrew Brien has prepared a plan for the council to spend up to $20,000, which would be matched by the South West Development Commission, for a hotel investment analysis.

In a report to the council, Mr Brien said Tourism WA may also contribute money for the plan.

He said the report would cover all key sites in Bunbury owned by the council and would be available to all serious investors.

"It has also been identified that whilst the initial site analysis would be specific for council-owned land, the report will need to provide generic information that could be made available to any developer looking to build hotel accommodation within the Bunbury area," Mr Brien.

Cr Michelle Steck questioned the need for the report during a council briefing session on Tuesday night.

Mayor Gary Brennan said the council had tried to attract a hotel development in Bunbury for the past two years.
