New chapter for librarian
Young people in local government will be given the opportunity to further their skills, thanks to grants from the State Government.
Capel Shire Council was one of 12 regional local governments to receive a grant.
The council was awarded $6800 which will go towards funding a Diploma of Library and Information Services for Rebecca Fardella, an Iluka Capel Library employee.
The course is designed to equip the student with the necessary skills and knowledge to qualify as a library technician.
Ms Fardella said she had thought about studying but didn’t have the money available.
“It is a huge opportunity and I am feeling quite special,” she said.
“I am really excited to become more knowledgeable in the library and be able to grow the services.
“I would like to be able to move towards more digital websites and create classes, programs and events at the library.”
Ms Fardella will start the 19-month online course in January, with support from the Iluka Capel Library staff.
Community services executive manager Michelle Plume said having the money available “lessens the burden on the young person”.
“One of the main challenges for young people in furthering their education is that they can’t afford the fees,” she said.
“It is also important as it provides opportunities for young people to stay local and learn in a local environment.
“It enables young people to see local government in a different light and to know there are career paths available.”
The diploma will also enable Ms Fardella to work confidently in different specialist areas and support those with higher level duties such as acquisition and maintenance of library resources, Ms Plume said.
Local Government Minister Paul Miles said the State Government recognised local governments were experiencing high staff turnover and an ageing workforce.
“It is important to support young people in regional areas to further their careers,” he said.
“Local governments are a key employer of young people and this program has been designed to help with the attraction and retention of young people in the local government sector.”
