Project winds up

South Western Times

The last of the massive wind turbines destined for the biggest wind farm in Australia left Bunbury Port last week, 18 months after planning started for the big project.

West Coast Trucking transported the final Nacell generator to the Collgar Wind Farm, 490km from Bunbury, near Merredin.

West Coast owner Reg Leitch said the generators, which will sit atop the wind turbine towers, weighed 76 tonnes and were 11.5m long, 4m wide and 3.5m high.

They will be driven by 45m long blades, of which 336 were trucked to the wind farm from the port.

Mr Leitch said the contract was, at times, a logistical nightmare, with traffic control and working around other companies’ schedules being major issues for the trucking company.

‘‘It’s certainly one of the biggest jobs we’ve done in a while,’’ he said.

Wind energy company Vestas received an order to build 111 units of turbines for the 206 megawatts Collgar wind farm, the biggest single order for the firm in Australia.
