Rio Tinto chair Dominic Barton says decarbonisation performance will dictate higher bonuses for executives

Rio Tinto chair Dominic Barton says a new bonus structure put to UK shareholders at an AGM in London overnight will hinge largely on how well executives deliver on aggressive decarbonisation targets. The board of the resources behemoth was peppered with lengthy questions from UK shareholders mainly eager to raise concerns about the sustainability of new and ongoing projects in Guinea, Serbia, Madagascar and Australia during its two-hour long annual meeting. Pushed by one shareholder on specifics and timelines for Rio’s climate transition, Mr Barton conceded the miner — which has pledged to reduce scope one and two emissions by 15 per cent by next year, 50 per cent by 2030 and hit net zero by 2050 — had set “aggressive targets”. He suggested a new bonus structure put to a vote at the meeting would “all be based” on how executives deliver on decarbonising. Rio has proposed to lift a long-term incentive plan currently capped at 400 per cent of an executive’s base salary to 500 per cent, in a move the miner’s remuneration committee chair Sam Laidlaw said would “position award levels closer to its peers”. Pay packets for Rio bigwigs were slashed from 438 per cent to 400 per cent in 2021 amid the fallout from the destruction of Juukan Gorge in the Pilbara. “What Sam mentioned in terms of the remuneration policy, the shift from the 400 to 500 per cent, that’s all going to be based . . . how well the executives do on how they deliver on the decarbonisation,” Mr Barton told shareholders on Thursday. “I have to tell you that’s come from management. Management wanted to have some teeth in the targets that we have. But we obviously have a lot of work that we have to do, we have a lot of initiatives in the pipeline.” Among Rio’s raft of upcoming mining projects is the Simandou iron ore mine in West Africa’s Guinea. Owned alongside Chinese metals giant Chinalco, Simandou is at this stage set to cost $9.5 billion to develop and churn out 120 million tonnes of iron ore a year once completed. Mr Barton said he and two directors had recently visited the proposed mine site and rail line. “There’s some significant things we need to worry about in terms of the Western chimpanzee, elephant routes and so forth,” he said. “ESG and adhering to that is extremely important for us.” Director Dean Dalla Valle said it was a six-day drive from Rio’s planned mine site to port. “(That) gives you an idea of the isolation and the area in which we’re working. This project is going to be so transformational for the people that area.”
