Grant Thornton rolls out nine-day fortnight finding it has boosted morale, and could help with retention

A manager at Grant Thornton’s Perth office says a nine-day fortnight model that’s just been made permanent after a year-long trial has been a big morale booster for junior staff and could also help with retention. Irish expat Christopher Lillis has been with the accounting and audit firm’s WA branch for more than two years, and has been using his spare day off every second Friday— or ‘recharge time’ as it’s been coined — seeing more of the State and ticking off life admin jobs. He’s a happy recipient of GT’s nine-day fortnight working arrangement, that the firm this week confirmed would be permanently adopted for all staff, with “no cuts to remuneration” and no changes to standard Monday to Friday operations. The trial began in March 2023 and according to an internal survey had the backing of 94 per cent of staff to keep it thereafter. Mr Lillis says for him it’s been a boon for improving work-life balance, but as a manager he believes it’s also had positive impact, especially on younger staff. “You can definitely see, especially with the junior staff, that they’re much happier ... getting that bit of time outside of work. You can see they’re taking more initiative to plan out their jobs so ... they can ensure they’re taking the recharge time. Communication within each team has definitely improved,” he said. According to the survey 85 per cent of workers said the policy had improved their wellbeing and 83 per cent said it “positively influenced their desire” to work for the firm. Staff at professional services firms are known for putting in long and gruelling hours, especially during busy tax periods, and the sector has also had its fair share the fight for a thinly spread talent pool. There has been a growing buzz in recent years too about the viability of four-day work week in Australia, as employees look for greater flexibility and to spend less time in the office. Medibank is one of the biggest players giving it a go and is currently in the middle of a six month trial. Mr Lillis agreed the new working model would be appealing to potential new recruits and retention of current staff. “I definitely think it will help with retention of staff because people are quite happy with it. And also from the recruitment aspect, I’m sure it’s a plus when people are starting to look at new jobs and looking for for a change,” he said. Mr Lillis is also of the view that the new system has prompted some rethinks on how to reduce admin work to make the time employees have more efficiently-spent. “We say, ‘do we actually need a two-hour meeting on this internally? No, let’s throw two meetings together and get it out the door a bit quicker’. “Trying to gain efficiencies from the admin side has definitely helped us get out on time finish at 5 o’clock and get out and enjoy our life outside of work.” He said employees have the flexibility to switch-up which day they take off in a cycle, depending on whether there’s a particular job or client commitment that needs to be met. “If we have something crop up, or there’s a client meeting you don’t want to let anybody down, so you take the call on that on that day, or you move your day to a different day.”
