Hard work puts rewards in reach

Newton Moore Senior High School student Glen Bennell is not afraid of jumping into the deep end at the South West Sports Centre.

Glen, 17, received an award sponsored by BHP Billiton from Royal Life Saving Society WA chief executive officer Peter Leaversuch at the centre on Friday - for his achievements while completing his certificate II sport and recreation traineeship.

Glen - who is also a South West Clontarf Academy student - said he was very proud to receive the award and believed it was a sign that he was working hard.

"I started in February last year and I've worked all over the centre but my goal is to become a lifeguard because I've always wanted to work in the sports industry," Glen said.

Mr Leaversuch said the award was an incentive to continue improving.

"It's good for young people to know that you don't need to go to university because there are other options," he said.

South West Sports Centre aquatic manager Roz Duncan said she was proud of Glen.

"He's a very reliable worker and he's completed first aid training and gained his bronze medallion since he's worked here," she said.

"We are looking at giving him lifeguard training in December, when he finishes his traineeship, because he has shown an interest in becoming a lifeguard."

South West Clontarf Academy director Gavin Greaves said his staff was also pleased for Glen.

"The South West Sports Centre has been a great host and Glen's traineeship has benefited both parties," he said.
