AWESOME International Arts Festival for Bright Young Things returns with Stephen Noonan’s The Boy and The Ball

Adelaide-based performer Stephen Noonan relishes creating and performing children’s theatre for an incredibly specific age group, rather than a broader general show. “Not many companies or artists want to go down that line, because I suppose it’s a very small audience and they need more bums on seats, which is understandable,” Noonan explains. “But you’d never give a four-year-old the same book that you give a 10-year-old, and they have completely different interest in things they want to watch on television or Netflix.” In 2022, an artist-in-residency at a kindergarten led to Noonan making The Boy and The Ball, a theatre experience specifically for four-year-olds, which he will perform as part of the AWESOME International Arts Festival for Bright Young Things 2024 program. “The world of the preschooler is where they’re first starting to encounter institutions, but it’s a really soft space,” says the father-of-two, who has worked as an actor and dancer for 30 years. “The show deals with friendship because sometimes preschool, or kindergarten, is the first time a child has to experience how to make a friend. “It’s a visual story, so it’s a non-verbal story about how one friend can become many. It sort of works a bit like a picture book. In this age group, children are really still attracted to a lot of picture books or minimal words, and so they get swept away with the images that are happening. “The Boy and The Ball very much taps into that world. It is a story, but it’s without words, and things seem to unfold and lead to the next scene and the next scene, where there’s a logical progression to it.” Noonan uses a tennis ball in the show as a kind of protagonist character, drawing his shy self out from his safe space on stage to a single audience member he has chosen before each performance. At AWESOME Festival, he will introduce himself to a parent or caregiver in the foyer, asking if they think their child would enjoy the experience of being a “helper” in the show. Each helper is given five minutes in the theatre before the show starts to familiarise themselves with the set and play a “get to know” game with Noonan before the rest of the audience is brought in. “Four-year-olds understand the world by participating in it,” he says. “I think a lot of other children in the audience delight in watching that child, because they see themselves through that child. “There’s this huge satisfaction, whether it’s one child, and later in the performance, at the end, every child has a moment of being able to be in the performance that we sort of carefully organise.” Noonan’s love of being kept on his toes harks back to his days as a street performer, using those same foundational skills in non-verbal cues to read his audiences and respond accordingly to their interaction. This year marks Noonan’s fourth time at AWESOME Festival, where he will also perform in Sally Chance Dance’s The Thing That Matters. “I was always attracted to working with and for children, especially the very young audiences,” Noonan says. “They love living in the world of imagination and whimsy and play. I really responded to that idea and that way of making work. When you’re performing for children, you’re often metres away from them, and you get to see and feel that sort of sheer joy and delight and disbelief when they’re so close. “AWESOME is a fantastic festival that really knows its audiences and provides high quality performances for them.” The Boy and The Ball is at State Theatre Centre of WA’s Middar Room, September 24 to 27.
