School aims to milk major art prize
Four years after earning the school a State prize, Glen Huon Primary School’s cow has had a makeover.
The school yesterday submitted its entry in the Picasso Cow Makeover competition, which offers State and national prizes.
Visual arts teacher Marie Hadet organised the project and said the students gained a lot out of their involvement.
“The students are learning about the dairy industry, participating in a big competition and doing artwork in a different way,” she said.
“It’s not every day you get to paint a cow.”
The project involved giving their life-size fibreglass cow a makeover through painting educational messages.
Unbeatable Bones was the theme chosen by Glen Huon students for the makeover and they aimed to depict a “volcano of milk” in their design.
The cow, which they named “Moo-tallic”, had images depicting nutrients, vitamin D and exercise painted on its body.
Painting the cow was only one part of the project.
Students also completed a learning journal, produced a Powerpoint presentation and made speeches to the school’s younger students about the importance of strong bones.
Ms Hadet said the Year 5 and 6 students selected for the project all made a valuable contribution.
“There are some students who are good at art and have great ideas whereas others are technicians and helped with the Powerpoint presentation.
“Everyone worked as a team and never said anything negative — it was a dream class.”
