GSSA 2024: Caledonians win back-to-back men’s division one titles, undefeated Denmark win women’s division one
Caledonians have saluted to their men’s division one title-winning year in style with a dominant victory in the final round of the Great Southern Soccer Association on Saturday night.
They eased past Polonia with a strong 3-0 victory courtesy of goals netted by Luca Trichilo, Nathan Kay and Joseph Love to secure back-to-back league titles.
Eight points ahead of Rovers, the reigning champions added another trophy to their cabinet after finishing with 17 wins one draw and a loss with a league-high goal difference of 63.
Second-placed Rovers (15-1-4) ended their season on a tremendous high, thumping Stirling Rangers 11-0 led superbly by forward talisman Justin Bielecki who nailed five goals.
Phoenix (12-2-6) finished their season with three consecutive wins after Corey Plug led them to a strong 3-0 victory over Bayswater, scoring a brilliant brace.
A dominant Denmark ended their season undefeated to win the women’s division one title but were made to work for their final win of the season by a determined Rovers.
A goal from Sally Bishop in the first 15 minutes proved the difference between the two sides as Denmark managed to hold on for a hard-fought 1-0 win on Friday night, their 19th victory of the campaign.
After conceding just nine goals this season Denmark dropped points in just one game this season when they drew with Phoenix in round 16 to finish 18 points clear on top of the ladder with a mighty goal difference of 69.
Caledonians (12-4-4), who were the nearest side to the title winners, notched a 5-1 victory over Mt Barker courtesy of braces from pair Kayla Stoney and Jessica Baines.
Mt Barker hit the lead early through Libby Morris in the eighth minute before Caledonians powered to the resounding triumph.
Phoenix were the biggest winners of the night, coasting to an 8-0 drubbing over Polonia.
Elisabeth Bosch converted a sublime hat-trick in the win which sealed their spot in the top three.
Phoenix celebrated a division two double with their men’s and the women’s sides both winning their respective titles.
The men’s team finished the triumphant year with a dominant 6-0 win over Bayswater on Saturday afternoon, while the women’s side beat Denmark Rezzies 2-0 on Friday night.
