A major future avenue for producers in the Capes region opened for public consultation this month, with interstate freight services from Busselton Airport in focus.

Development and expansion of the City of Busselton-managed asset was partly based on providing a conduit for regional producers to transport their wares to outside markets, with trade in local commodities and bespoke products another way to promote the region.

“The city and South West Aviation Services are exploring the potential for air freight operations at the Busselton-Margaret River Airport on existing routes between Busselton, Melbourne and Sydney, Australia, and want to find out if this would help support your business,” a spokesperson said.

Freight was not limited to food products, it was noted.

“Businesses with non-perishable items wishing to reach customers over east are also invited to provide their feedback,” they said.

“Whether you are a food producer, vigneron, flower grower, gourmet product creator, or need to airfreight your products, we welcome your thoughts.”

The airport is increasingly tied to the region’s growth, with real estate agents noting proximity to the airport as well as direct passenger flights to Sydney and Melbourne as drivers for the market.

It was anticipated growth in airfreight exports was another plank in supporting the Capes region’s economic community’s growth.

The survey information would also be compiled to further map the region’s local manufacturing and business make-up.

The survey is available online by visiting yoursay.busselton.wa.gov.au/freight and closes on December 20.
