Margaret River residents are encouraged to get along to an event on Sunday as part of National Reconciliation Week.

An afternoon of cultural activities led by Wadandi matriarch Vivian Brockman Webb and cultural custodian Mitchella Hutchins will include weaving, face-painting, beading and a land art installation alongside Elaine Clocherty and others.

Also on the bill is a dance performance from the Wadandi women as well as music from local choirs and musicians, joining special guests Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse.

Ms Brockman Webb said she wanted “everyone to know that the focus of the day is a community and family friendly event and a chance to come together”.

This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme is ‘Now More Than Ever’ and is the first to take place in the wake of the failed national referendum on the Aboriginal Voice to Parliament in October last year.

Organisers said the week was a reminder “that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will and must continue”.

“It’s all about unity and walking together as one, connecting as a community through the healing modalities of music and art, yarning, connecting and being free from judgments and assumptions,” spokesperson Di Gee said.

“We are all walking and living on Wadandi Boodja. Even our children are born here.

“They are the future and we want a brighter unified future for them too.”

The free event will run from 12pm to 3pm at Margaret River HEART - Nala Bardip Mia.
