Margaret River Open Swim opens for entries with $49,700 in State Government support
The Margaret River Ocean Swim opened for entries this week while also celebrating a State Government cash injection.
Warren-Blackwood MLA Jane Kelsbie announced the Swimming Mermaids group, which has run the annual swim since 2003, would receive $49,700 to fund the ongoing event.
Scheduled for January 11 next year, the Gnarabup-based swim sees scores of competitors take on the classic 1km “out and back box course” which co-ordinator Charlotte O’Beirne said was designed for swimmers of all levels.
Meanwhile, a 200 metre course was a shorter challenge for children.
“The Margaret River Ocean Swim event is more than just a race, it’s a celebration of community, fun and the joy of swimming,” Ms O’Beirne said.
“Mark your calendars for January 11, 2025, and join us at the beautiful Gnarabup Bay, for an exciting day of open-water swimming.
“This inclusive event is open to everyone, welcoming swimmers of all ages and abilities to enjoy a day of fitness, fun, and community spirit.
“Whether you’re competing, cheering, or simply soaking up the scenic beauty of Gnarabup Bay, this is an event not to miss.”
This year’s race had a particular focus on engaging with new migrants who often benefitted from improved ocean safety and swimming skills, organisers said.
In revealing the State Government’s support for the ocean swim, Ms Kelsbie said the Sport and Recreation Events Funding Program grant was one way to foster community spirit and healthy activity.
“This iconic local event brings people together, encouraging everyone to take part and experience the joy of open water swimming,” she said.
“It’s a wonderful way to build community and celebrate our stunning coastline.”
