Hours before her life was cruelly taken from her in a Sydney shopping centre, new mum Ash Good was posting a video to her Instagram of her nine-month-old baby smiling in her car seat.

The sun beams on the little girl’s face as she nibbles on a piece of bread and the song My Girl by The Temptations plays.

“I’ve got sunshine, on a cloudy day. When it’s cold outside, I’ve got the month of May,” the band sings.

Less than eight hours later, Ms Good and her baby were shopping in Westfield Bondi Junction, in Sydney’s east, when a man armed with a hunting knife launched a violent stabbing attack through the shopping centre.

Horrified witnesses spoke of how the 40-year-old attacker, shot dead by police on Saturday afternoon, targeted the baby and then turned on Ms Good, stabbing her as well.

In a final act of heroism, Ms Good ran to two brothers in the shop and begged them to take her baby. They used clothes from the nearby racks to try and stem the bleeding on both the mother and daughter but Ms Good’s injuries were too severe.

She died in St Vincent’s Hospital on Saturday night at the age of 38.

The baby has undergone emergency surgery in Sydney Children’s Hospital for multiple stab wounds to her abdomen.

Ms Good was one of seven people — five women, one man, plus the male perpetrator — to die in the horrific attack that has left the nation reeling. At least eight more are in hospital recovering from their injuries.

Tributes have begun to flow for Ms Good, who counted some of Australia’s best-known sporting personalities among her friends and family.

Her father, Kerry Good, is a former Australian rules footballing great who played for North Melbourne in the VFL from the late 1970s.

She was also close with beach volleyballer and Olympic gold medallist Kerri Pottharst.

“Ash Good, a beautiful soul has been taken from us. My prays (sic) go out to your child and family. You will be greatly missed,” friend Damien Da Silva wrote on social media.

Ms Good, an account manager at DocuSign, only recently returned to work, taking to LinkedIn a month ago to speak about how much she loved being a mum.

Alongside the post was a number of smiling photos of her and her partner with Harriet.

“And just like that, seven beautiful months have passed and it’s time to return to the office,” she wrote.

“It’s not lost on me what a privilege it is to become a parent. And then to be gifted some extra time away from work to spend with your child.. it’s very special.”

“Very thankful to Docusign for their parental leave policy; I have felt nothing but kindness and support.

“It feels great to work for a company that truly enhances the journey into parenthood. And it feels great to be back.”
