Students get on their bikes for Ride to School

More than 100 South Bunbury Primary School students, parents and family members left the car in the garage and jumped on their bikes to get to school as part of an initiative by the school’s Dads Group.

Students met at the Big Swamp and, under the guidance of teachers and parents, safely made their way to school.

The event coincided with National Ride Your Bike to School Day.

South Bunbury Dads Group leader Lee Aird said the focus of the day was teaching the kids how to get to school safely.

“With the help of the parents and some teachers, we rode all the way to school, making sure we had our helmets on, getting off our bikes when we crossed roads and everyone locked up their bikes,” he said.

“We have had a focus on bike safety all week.

“I heard heaps of them say ‘we should ride to school more often’ and as long as they do it in a safe way, that’s exactly what we want to happen.”

The school had 130 students ride to school and a further 28 walk on the day.
