There is no doubt Pete Murray is an icon of the Australian music scene.

His sophomore album Feeler propelled him into the spotlight, with songs including So Beautiful, Better Days and Opportunity making him part of the country’s soundtrack to the mid-2000s.

While most people would be slowing down towards the end of the year, Murray is heating up.

He released his latest single Wouldn’t It Be Good last month before gearing up for a national tour slated to start just before Christmas.

Murray admits his newest track was not an instant hit, with his friends not initially responding well to it when it was first written.

“But I still really liked the song and never gave up on it,” he said.

“Then I had my nephew Dylan Cattanach help me out on an early demo, and it was here that I really started to hear the potential of the song, but people still weren’t getting it.

“During the recording of the album, I even played it to (producer) Luke (Palmer) and he wasn’t that into it, so I left it until the very end of the album recording and I brought it up again and got Luke to help me with it.

“There is a really great drum groove with congas paying and I got Luke to play a bass line on it too. As soon as I heard the bass, acoustic and drums, I knew this was going to work and the whole song just fell into place after that.“

The song is also the first he has released since becoming an independent artist again.

It will form a key part of his upcoming tour, which will head to The Dunsborough on January 10 before he performs in Ravenswood and Rottnest Island.

Murray said crowds can expect to hear his new release, as well as his classics.

“I’m hoping it will be a fan favourite by the end of the tour,” he said.

“It’s always exciting growing as an artist and writing and recording new songs. I’m loving the groove on this track, so it’s going to be a fun one to play live.”

Tickets are available for the Dunsborough show from Oztix.
