Climate reporting risk countdown closes in with many companies ill-prepared, new RSM research claims

WA companies are leading the pack in preparing for mandatory climate reporting, new research has found, as the rest of the country risks languishing behind. Professional services firm RSM surveyed more than 1500 Australian companies to determine where they ranked on climate-related reporting disclosures and how prepared they were for the introduction of looming mandatory climate reporting scheduled for rollout in July 2024. Findings suggested companies in WA — home to some of Australia’s biggest emitters — were leading the way in disclosing scope 1 and 2 emissions at a rate of 45 per cent. But it also has the second lowest rate of companies now disclosing scope 3 emissions. The report found most private and public companies nationally were ill-prepared. “Anecdotally there is this sentiment that ‘it doesn’t affect me’, particularly office-based organisations ... but the fact of the matter is regulation, reporting requirements, it’s going to impact all businesses,” RSM Australia partner and director of ESG and climate services Catherine Bell said. “Companies in WA of all sizes should not underestimate the amount of work ... and investment that will be required to comply with arguably the most challenging addition to corporate disclosure regimes.” Her warning comes after the Australian Accounting Standards board released a draft of new proposed reporting standards, a key step in standardising climate-related reporting in Australia. Feedback on the proposed scheme closes on March 2024 and will be based on board analysis and industry feedback. Finalised standards are then expected to phased in from July 1, 2024. According to RSM, companies with more than 500 employees will be the first to be forced to disclose physical material risks of climate change, such as bushfires or flooding. Transitional risks associated with how a company adapts to climate change from a reputational and legal perspective are also being considered. The standards will apply to smaller companies in the three years following. RSM associate director and ESG adviser Karien Erasmus said anecdotal responses to the report so far and the prospect of impending reporting requirements had been varied. “On the one hand, major clients, major corporations ... they’ve really taken up with charge with regards to climate change,” she said. “(The other) end of that spectrum, which has been quite jarring, a lot of these companies at the other end of the polls simply do not believe that climate change is has got anything to do with their business. And I think that’s quite an interesting message, even at this point in time.” Ms Bell warned companies that were not prepared could eventually find themselves in the crosshairs of the Australian Securities and Investments Commissions. It could spell another round of regulatory burden for companies already professing to struggle with the tangles of red and green tape.
