A 79-year-old man has died after being hit by a car, with police hunting for the driver who allegedly failed to stop.

Paramedics treated the injured man but he died at the scene after being hit on Abell Road at Melonba in Sydney's west about 11.20pm on Sunday.

Police believe he was hit by a purple or blue coupe travelling east on the road, however the driver allegedly failed to stop.

A report is being prepared for the coroner while investigators appeal for any dashcam footage from the area or other information.
