Ex-Brisbane captain Matt Smith appointed to Roar management role

Former Brisbane Roar captain Matt Smith has returned to the A-League club in an off-field management role.

Smith, who won three championships with the Roar, has been appointed general manager of the club’s commercial operations.

“Since I left the club in 2014, I’ve always been keeping a close eye on the team and how they’ve been playing, as well as the club and its progress,” said Smith, whose most recent role was director of football and first-team coach of NPL Queensland club Brisbane City.

“I’m excited to play a key role in trying to continue to build the club and I’m looking forward to working with the staff and different communities involved with Brisbane Roar.”

The appointment of Smith, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in marketing and leisure management from the University of Gloucestershire, is part of a Roar restructure following the departure of former CEO David Pourre.

Ante Kovacevic, who has previously worked for Adelaide United, Perth Glory and Western United, has also been appointed a Roar general manager and will head the club’s football department.

“Queensland has a great number of footballers playing the game and has always managed to produce quality footballers for the NPL, A-League and national teams,” Kovacevic said.

“We want to continue to ensure the Brisbane Roar is an integral part to this development system and work together with all football stakeholders.”

Long-time club employee Rizka Laya has also been appointed to a general manager’s role. with her focus being on club services.

“This is an exciting opportunity for me, and I am looking forward to taking on the responsibilities and making the most of it,” Laya said.
