Beware flood appeal scams

South Western Times

Consumer Protection urges South West residents to thoroughly check the legitimacy of charities in order to truly help flood victims, following reports of scammers attempting to get money or credit card details under the guise of fund raising, a release from the Department of Commerce said.

There are many genuine avenues available for those wanting to donate money or goods and Consumer Protection holds the details of registered charities in WA and organises permits for people who want to collect for those charities.

Residents who have any doubts about the authenticity of street collectors or door-to-door collectors should ask for full details of the charity including the name, address and a contact phone number.

To report a scam or verify the legitimacy of a charity, call the Consumer Protection advice line on 1300 304 054, call the local number on 9722 2888 or report the matter to the police.

The register of licensed charities can be viewed at www.commerce.wa.gov.au/charities.
