Derby girls search for 'fresh meat'

If you’ve always fancied yourself as a bit of an adrenaline junkie, now’s your chance to put yourself to the test.

Bunbury Roller Derby is hosting this year’s first open call-out for new members next Tuesday.

The girls at BRD say everyone is welcome because even though derby is a women’s sport, men can still participate as referees and non-skating officials.

If you are over the age of 18 and in need of a safe way to vent those frustrations, come along and release your inner daredevil at BRD’s ‘‘Fresh Meat’’ intake.

‘‘Fresh Meat is a tongue-in-cheek derby reference to new girls,’’ Denise Ladhams, better known as D’lish Destruction and president of the league, said.

‘‘The thing to remember is that roller derby has a very specific sense of humour, so don’t be alarmed because it’s all in good fun.’’

Roller derby is a women’s only full contact sport that has risen to a new level of popularity in recent years and is characterised by its theatrical image and strong punk aesthetic.

But there’s much more to it than that.

‘‘Roller derby is about empowering women — derby gals are selfconfident women who are strong, fit and happy,’’ Mrs Ladhams said.

PowerfulBRDjammer Ally Beattie (aka Heidi Handcuffs) says being a part of the league has changed her perspective on life.

‘‘The league has a strong culture of family and fun that has changed my life for the better,’’ Ms Beattie said.

Bunbury Roller Derby’s Fresh Meat intake for 2012 will be held at The Rink on Gibbons Road in Halifax from 6.30pm.

Cost is $10 and all participants need a mouthguard.
