Grant gets wheels rolling

South Western Times

A South West Development Commission grant of more than $13,000 has helped Meals on Wheels continue to serve the community.

The kitchen now has four stoves to help ensure between 80 and 100 meals are distributed from the Bunbury branch every day.

Yvonne Rose has volunteered for the organisation for the past three years and said it was an essential service in Bunbury.

‘‘They wouldn’t be having any meals if it wasn’t for us,’’ Mrs Rose said.

Meals on Wheels coordinator Bev Buck said the service was more than providing a nutritious meal to the elderly and people with disabilities.

Clients like a social chat, according to Mrs Buck.

‘‘Meals on Wheels is absolutely vital, because a lot of people have no one who visits them but us,’’ she said.

Meatballs and spaghetti, sausages and onion with gravy, ham and leek pie, roast beef, spinach and mushroom frittata and lamb patties are some of the dishes served to clients.

Meals are sold at a highly reduced amount — $6.50 for dinner and dessert and $1 less without dessert.

Bunbury Senior Citizens Centre president Alan Hogg said all the volunteers were devoted to the role and thrive off helping the community.

‘‘Every part of it is volunteering except for a few basic staff members,’’ Mr Hogg said.

‘‘We could do with more volunteers, they are the cornerstone of this.’’
