More demand on welfare
The Federal Budget will cause a bigger strain on welfare resources with more low-income earners needing support, according to Bunbury Salvation Army Corps Major Trevor Wilson.
Treasurer Wayne Swan has announced a $2 billion freeze on middle class welfare to help bankroll workforce participation in the Budget, as well as $1.2 billion gouging family tax payments.
Maj. Wilson said the Budget would have a ‘‘flow-on impact’’.
‘‘People are going to turn to agencies for more help,’’ he said.
The Salvation Army will need community support for this year’s Red Shield Appeal on May 29.
‘‘We are always 200 collectors too short,’’ Maj.Wilson said.
‘‘What I find is more people are willing to give than those who go out and collect the money.’’
