Seniors expo offers free health checks

South Western Times

This year’s South West Seniors Expo will once again boast a onestop- shop for the health and wellbeing of over 55s.

The popular Edith Cowan University Health Check Stalls will be available, with nursing students on hand to perform a range of health assessments from blood pressure to dental checks.

Students will also provide advice on a number of health issues from falls prevention to diabetes awareness and responsible drinking.

Nursing lecturer Jennie Sharp said the free checks were provided by final year nursing students.

“The students have identified through research eight different health issues that are relevant to seniors and each of those will have its own stall,” she said.

“If any kind of problem is discovered visitors are either provided with information about the issue or encouraged to visit their general practitioner.

“I would definitely encourage seniors to have the checks done as it is an opportunity to check their health status free of charge.”

South West Seniors’ Expo president Merv Mancer said the ECU Health Check Stalls were just some of more than 60 attractions on offer at the November 3 event.

“The expo has been an outstanding success so far and we try to make it bigger every year,” he said.

“We’re expecting more than 10,000 visitors on the day and there will be exhibits for travel, insurance, household appliances, health issues, food and wine — basically everything seniors are interested in.”

Mr Mancer said stall space was still available and anyone interested in exhibiting at the expo could call the information line on 9795 7354.
