Sun sets on successful sailing season
The hard work by all involved with the Sail Into Life program was highlighted at the closing ceremony last Thursday.
The participants, organisers, volunteers and sponsors of the sailing program for people with disabilities gathered to celebrate the successful conclusion of the season.
Program coordinator Sharon Kavanagh said the program had grown in the eight years it had run.
“This program shows sailing is for everyone,” she said.
“Sailing wouldn’t happen without the volunteers who help out on sailing days.”
About 150 people participated in Sail Into Life this year, six times more the 25 people who were involved when the program started.
People who participated came from organisations including the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Activ Foundation and Enable South West.
The program’s sailors each received a certificate of participation at the season’s closing morning tea at Koombana Bay Sailing Club.
The newest boat to the program – a 303 dinghy – was on display at the morning tea.
It will be put to use in the next Sail Into Life season which begins in October.
Ms Kavanagh said the more volunteers were needed. The program is an initiative of the Rotary Clubs of Bunbury, South Bunbury and Bunbury-Leschenault.
