Workers support flying doctors - on jetskis

Nine fly-in fly-out workers and jetski enthusiasts embarked on a run from Bunbury to Busselton on Saturday to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctors Service.

Group leader Graeme Napier said the idea started two years ago, when he, his son and a friend, Jayden Loffler, attempted the ride.

Mr Loffler said the event was a great option for a ride following the closure of the Koombana Bay ski beach.

Luke Armstrong, who joined the ride last weekend, said it was a worthwhile event.

“It’s good to get out for a good cause and meet like-minded people,” he said.

Mr Napier was pleasantly surprised by the number of people wanting to participate this year.

He said most of the riders were FIFO workers who had either used or relied on the RFDS.

“Being up in the mines the RFDS is our lifeline,” he said.

“We all felt it was a great way to give something back.”

Mr Napier’s son Corey, 17, said the RFDS was a cause that hit close to home.

“I think it’s a really good cause and it saved my little brother,” he said.

T-shirts were designed and sold for $30 each with 30 per cent of the profits donated to RFDS.

Most of the money raised on the weekend was donated by people the riders met on the day.

A total of $700 was raised and there are plans for the event to take place next year on February 15.
