Shane Malcolm Terrae: Mining shift worker has no memory of swearing at police, directing obscene gestures

A mining shift worker has told a court he had no memory of the afternoon he was ejected from two Kalgoorlie-Boulder pubs, swore at police and directed obscene gestures at them. Shane Malcolm Terrae, 53, appeared in Kalgoorlie Magistrates court on Monday, where he pleaded guilty to a single charge of disorderly behaviour. Police prosecutor Sen. Const. Matthew Fullgrabe told the court Terrae held both middle fingers up at police as he walked along Hannan Street while yelling “f*** you” at them multiple times. The incident took place 10 minutes after Terrae was asked to leave the York Hotel, with police issuing a move-on notice about 3.10pm on Monday, November 4. Police were at the Exchange Hotel at 3.23pm as Terrae was being asked to leave, with staff about to call police when they arrived. Terrae represented himself in court on Monday, where he said he did not recall anything from the day after clocking off night shift that morning. He said he had been awake for about 24 hours at the time of the incidents and had been drinking for most of the day. Terrae said he did not usually come to Hannan Street when drinking, preferring to fall asleep at home, and did not remember leaving his house. Magistrate Paul Lyons told Terrae police would have preferred he stay home that day. “Quite frankly, they see enough of this kind of offending,” Mr Lyons said. “Don’t make a habit of this.” Terrae was handed a $500 fine and ordered to pay $156 in prosecution costs.
