Australia’s newest city launched

WA Governor Malcolm McCusker suggested the pretty maiden of Kwinana has grown into a woman as he launched its city status celebrations on Monday.

Paying tribute to the Aboriginal translation of Kwinana, Mr McCusker said the move to city status was a special achievement for all those who had been involved in Kwinana’s history.

‘‘The growth and development phase under way at present is testament to the many years of hard work and commitment to grow this area into one of Western Australia’s most attractive and community-focused residential areas,’’ he said.

‘‘Kwinana is now home to over 30,000 people and in the coming decade is due to double in size again.

‘‘Keeping up with this growth is certainly a challenge. However, I believe through the good planning that has been demonstrated over the last 60 years, there is no doubt that the area will continue to flourish.

‘‘I understand that the political climate at present means that the future for this city is unknown, but I am truly glad that you have taken the opportunity to celebrate and officially mark this occasion. ’’

In the past five years Kwinana’s growth has been about twice the national average. It has welcomed almost 6000 new residents and big population growth is expected over the next 20 years.

Cr Adams said this growth was indicative of Kwinana’s repositioning to be one of Perth’s most attractive destinations for families.

‘‘It’s no surprise that our numbers continue to grow considering the unique combination of rural and modern housing which Kwinana has to offer, the major investment into new infrastructure and our unmatched sense of community pride.

‘‘Here in Kwinana we will continue to ensure we maintain this strong community—despite what may lie ahead with local government reform — we truly believe that Kwinana will always be Kwinana.’’
