Hundreds of Mexican sailors aboard the tall ship ARM Cuauhtemoc made a spectacular arrival at Fremantle port on Wednesday, with crew seen standing atop the ship’s mast as it berthed at Victoria Quay.

The international arrival is part of a tri-continental training cruise for the crew made up of fourth year Mexican naval cadets, who most recently visited Jakarta as part of an eight-month “goodwill cruise”.

Standing at more than 76m high and with a main mast more than 48m tall, the Cuauhtemoc was launched in 1982 and has travelled more than 750,000 nautical miles and visited more than 60 countries and 212 ports over the past four decades.

Not only that, the ship and its crew have also participated in many high-profile maritime and tall-ship events world-wide, winning the Boston Teapot Trophy and the Cutty Sark Trophy twice.

The ship, which last berthed in Perth in 2006, will set sail for Sydney on Saturday, offering the community a chance to see the vessel up close and personal before then.

From Sydney, the vessell and its crew will go on to visit ports in New Zealand and Tahiti before returning to Mexico in December.
