Bunbury City Council has warned that microchipping dogs over the age of three months is compulsory.

The council said dog owners could be hit with a $200 fine if they failed to follow the legislation under the Dog Act.

It warns dogs impounded by the council may not be released from the pound without a microchip.

Dog owners are required to provide a microchip number as proof their pet is microchipped when registering it with the council.
