A fitting horse-drawn send-off

South Western Times

Given Trevor Crouch’s love of horses it was only fitting he take his last ride to the Bunbury Crematorium in a horse-drawn cart.

The veteran horse trainer and driver was given a spectacular send-off on Friday afternoon in a 1900s-style cart drawn by a pair of big Percheron draft horses.

Mr Crouch’s youngest son Barry said his father had been involved in the pacing industry for more than 35 years.

“Dad had many successes in the trotting industry with wins in the Pinjarra and Busselton Cups and second and third placings in the Bunbury Cup,” he said.

“But Dad was more about the people and fun of racing — he never boasted about his wins, he let his horses do the talking.”

Mr Crouch, from Donnybrook, was born on May 8, 1930, and died in Bunbury on November 10.

The father of four — Raelene, Graham, Bruce and Barry — has been remembered as a man of humour and hard work.

His family hired the Golden Sunset Tours horse and cart to take him from the Archer and Sons funeral home to the crematorium as a unique way to honour him.

Barry Crouch said he had a nervous moment when he arrived at the crematorium and found the car park was empty.

“We left before the carriage and when we got to the crematorium it was empty and I thought ‘no one’s coming to Dad’s funeral’,” he said.

“But of course they’d all been caught up behind the carriage.”
