Bunbury Senior High School has a rich history of nurturing top athletes who go on to the big stages, but the 2014 crop at the school could yet be their most successful.

So far this year the school has 22 students representing the State in a range of sports, including basketball, hockey, cycling, AFL and athletics.

One of the features which allows the school to be so successful with its up-and-coming athletes, is the Department of Education-funded Bunbury Elite Sports Training program.

BEST is aimed at athletic conditioning and performance for a range of sporting fields, by applying sports science.

Head of health and physical education Ian Lockhart said it was an unusually high number of athletes for the school to have representing the State in the one year.

“Annually 12 or 13 would be a good year, but to have 22 kids is amazing, ” he said.

“My view is for kids to make State teams, a lot of ducks have to line-up.

“They have to have the talent, they need parental support and support from community organisations.”
