After a hectic year, singer Abbe May has decided to take a break, but before she does, the Bunbury girl will return to her favourite place to perform.

The ARIA-nominee has worked non-stop for the past three years, but will perform her new music in Bunbury next week, before she takes some time off to “explore her creativity”.

“What I’ve really enjoyed the last couple of times I’ve played in Bunbury is seeing the nature of the youth and how cool it is,” May said.

“It’s a really cool little city and it’s really fun to get back amongst that when I can.

“I love Bunbury — it will be a real homecoming and I am proud to say that I grew up there.”

The down-to-earth artist is well known for her views and political opinion.

So when her newest album Kiss my Apocalypse was released earlier this year, May expected some backlash.

“It’s very different to the last record (Design Desire,). I was expecting to be misunderstood, but to my surprise people just seemed to really get it and appreciate it,” she said.

“There are people who are adamant that rock ‘n’ roll is the only way and they expressed their opinion and I’ve pressed delete and block on Facebook.

“I’ve never really been interested in the opinions of people who aren’t interested in the opinions of others.

“Most people are willing to follow an artist through the many twists and turns of their creativity.”

This year alone, Kiss My Apocalypse gained critical acclaim.

May also signed with prestigious publisher Alberts, went viral with her cover of Ginuwine’s Pony, from Triple J’s Like a Version and has rounded off the year with the ARIA nomination for best female artist.

“It’s pretty awesome to have been nominated, amongst people who have massive record labels behind them” she said.

The end of May’s Bunbury tour will mark the start of a hiatus for the singer, who plans to brush up on her photography skills and work on her blog.

Abbe May will perform with guests Marthas at the Prince of Wales Hotel on December 19.
