Doctors are assessing whether the man accused of punching a female doctor in the face and stealing her car before attacking a father with a shovel is fit to understand the charges.

Leslie Robert Riley, 41, is still in Bunbury Hospital where he was admitted yesterday after he allegedly went on a violent rampage.

A doctor was forced out of her vehicle in the hospital carpark yesterday morning and suffered a broken nose.

The car was allegedly driven to College Grove where a man jumped a fence and threatened a woman holding her 10-month-old son in her backyard.

The woman’s partner tackled the intruder, before he turned on the father hitting him with the shovel several times.

Mr Riley was allegedly detained at the scene and taken into police custody a short time later.

Police yesterday said Mr Riley was taken to hospital for treatment, but not injuries.

He was due to appear in Bunbury Magistrates Court this morning, but is still being assessed as to whether he is fit to understand the details of the charges laid against him.

Mr Riley has been charged with one count each of aggravated robbery, stealing a motor vehicle, threatening to kill, grievous bodily harm and trespassing.

Doctors will assess whether a bedside hearing is appropriate or whether Mr Riley will face court later today.
