Bunbury City Council and State Emergency Service volunteers have joined forces to remind homeowners to be storm ready.

Both are warning that winter is coming and so is the risk of wild weather potentially causing property damage and personal injury.

Community safety and emergency management team leader Chris Widmer said every year storms and winds "wreaked havoc" in the South West.

Mr Widmer said volunteers did not want to see people suffering damage which could have been avoided.

"We don't want to see damage to community members who thought that the risk of storm damage was not real and were therefore surprised to be victims," he said.

"Residents can greatly reduce their risk of storm damage to the home by cleaning up their properties and taking advantage of the forthcoming hard and green waste collections.

"It is also important to have an emergency-ready kit handy in the home."

While exact figures on last year's call-outs are yet to be released, Mr Widmer said volunteers expected to help at least 50 families this winter in Bunbury alone.

"They have worked hard to prepare their equipment and train for the forthcoming winter season," Mr Widmer said.

"They would appreciate knowing that the community is also doing its part to provide a storm-resilient community."

The SES suggests trimming trees away from roofs and windows, cleaning gutters and downpipes and securing outside objects at risk of being picked up by winds.
