Bunbury will host a celebration of indigenous culture when IndigifestOz comes to town as part of Bunbury Regional Art Galleries’ Shine the Light family day tomorrow.

The free event coincides with Noongar Day and has an activity-filled schedule including live music performances, dance and art workshops, film screenings and gallery tours.

BRAG education officer Michele Grimston said she was excited for the community to come together and recognise talented artists in the region.

“It will be a real celebration of culture,” Ms Grimston said.

“It’s a place for people to share a relaxed, fun environment and get to learn a bit about indigenous culture as well.”

The Ochre Contemporary Dance Company will be there, giving dance workshops and Noongar country artist Kye McGuire will run kids art classes throughout the afternoon.

Showcasing some of the region’s most talented Noongar artists was something Ms Grimston hoped would show that “everyone has their light to shine”.

“There are so many incredible Noongar artists in our area and so many different styles,” she said.

“For us to be able to tie it in with family day is a special opportunity.”

Ms Grimston said guests could also look forward to a variety of free food.

“We’ll have a barbecue lunch with kangaroo sliders and hot dogs as well as popcorn for the film screenings,” she said.

“It’s all about drawing out different elements of indigenous culture.”

The festivities will begin at 12pm and run through until 4pm.
