Bunbury artist Sue Kalab's month-long exhibition in Busselton will mix art with public seminars on the environment.

The exhibition, Nature Wise and Wonderful - Words in Pictures From the Bush and Beach, started at ArtGeo Gallery on Friday.

Ms Kalab is showcasing 23 pieces that focus on a woman's perspective of walking Earth, as well as other environmental concepts such as migratory birds, black cockatoos and nature's finds.

The exhibition has been a long time in the making for the artist, who began planning this time last year and painting six to eight months ago.

She said people often asked how long it took her to paint a piece and many didn't realise how many layers go in to some artworks.

"There's so much work involved in each one," she said.

"There's just layers and layers of colour."

Ms Kalab said she used to live in national park in Victoria and had been painting nature for about 30 years.

"I never sort of chose it - it chose me and I've just stayed with it," she said.

Ms Kalab's exhibition will form a backdrop for a series of public seminars on nature conservation, being conducted by scientists and volunteers.

The seminars have been planned to coincide with various world environment days.

The exhibition ends on June 14.
