South West residents can get a taste of the Olympics in Bunbury next week when the Flame of Hope comes to the city.

Police and athletes will come together for the Law Enforcement Torch Run and Special Olympics Fun Day on August 21 at the Bunbury Forum Shopping Centre.

Before a ceremony to light the cauldron takes place at the centre to officially start the fun day of activities, about 50 police officers from across the State and Special Olympics South West athletes will carry the Flame of Hope torch through Bunbury.

The run will start at the Bunbury Police Station and finish at the shopping centre.

Special Olympics South West chairwoman Allison Burnett said the committee and athletes were excited to be a part of the special event.

“Not only will it help create a more inclusive and accessible community but it will also provide us with much-needed funds,” Ms Burnett said.

“That will allow us to continue to provide low or no cost sporting opportunities for people with intellectual disability who live in the South West.”

Bunbury Forum Shopping Centre will host the fun day featuring more than 20 sports activities and event visitors will have the opportunity to get a photo with the torch and cauldron.

Event-goers are encouraged to donate cash throughout the day to support the athletes ahead of the Trans Tasman Tournament in November.
