Aussie 90s favourites Skunkhour return to South West for first time since 2002 with new EP Parts of the Sun

Rock fans rejoice, Aussie favourites Skunkhour are returning to the South West, bringing their revitalised 90s sound to the region for the first time since 2002. As the music scene cycles back to the eclectic, nostalgic sounds of times gone by, the Sydney-based group have taken full advantage, releasing a new four-track EP Parts of the Sun and taking it for a spin around the country. On tour since September, the group will round out the nationwide trip in WA, playing Margaret River’s The River on October 21 before closing the tour in Fremantle. Band bassist turned drummer Dean Sutherland told the South Western Times it’s been great to get on the road again. “Crowds have been excellent and very enthusiastic,” he said. “We’ve been playing in the pocket and grooving and so it’s been actually really, really good... fans are just so loyal so (we’re) very grateful that we can still play in venues and people come,” he said. The September EP is described as a “time capsule” of their career, with each track a snapshot of different sounds from their most active time period from 1991-2001. Sutherland said loyal fans had been begging for new music. “We thought no, why not? We haven’t released anything in about 20 years, let’s just do it,” he said. “I think (the EP) harks back to the first two albums but was kind of updated into the 20-21st century style, you know, particularly in the production of the song Blue... it came out just beautifully.” And amid the resurrection of 90s flavour, the drummer said it’s been “amazing” to welcome some new fans with it. “We’re kind of crossing over, fans will probably have kids in their late teens and 20s and stuff and I guess they’ve been feeding them Skunk so it has been quite amazing instead of just the older fans, the young ones are coming along as well,” he said.
