Australia Day fun

There were snags on the barbie and the brass band played Waltzing Matilda as thousands of proud Australians from around the region gathered at Bunbury’s Bicentennial Square to celebrate our country’s national day.

Smiling children with painted faces waved flags in the morning sun while the less energetic sat down to enjoy a traditional Aussie breakfast.

A record number of more than 500 fitness enthusiasts participated in the annual Australia Day Fun Run before the crowd gathered to hear Mayor David Smith present the Citizen of the Year,Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year awards.

Making the most of a public holiday that stops the nation, many families made their way to the Big Swamp Wildlife Park for a picnic before returning to Bicentennial Square to explore the markets and side show alley.

The Graham Bricknell Music Shell was the place to be in the afternoon with many enjoying the The Dale Alcock Homes South West Family Concert feature Courtney Murphy.
