Batten down the hatches!

South Western Times

FESA has warned of dangerous thunderstorms approaching the coast from Bunbury to Jurien Bay.

A spokesperson said that residents in, near or between a line from Jurien Bay to Beacon to Corrigin to Bunbury should take action and stay safe with the start of the dangerous weather.

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised severe thunderstorms could bring destructive winds and heavy rainfall.

A low pressure system to the southwest of Perth is producing showers and thunderstorms over the southwest of the State, with isolated dangerous gusts that could cause significant damage to homes and property.

Showers and thunderstorms may also cause heavy rainfall that may cause flash flooding during this afternoon.

The bad weather is expected to move east southeast with conditions expected to ease during the afternoon.

FESA's State Emergency Service said families should:

- Close curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows.

- If caught outside find safe shelter away from trees, powerlines, storm water drains and streams.

- If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water.

- Store or weigh down loose objects around your home or work, like outdoor furniture, that could be picked up and thrown by strong winds, causing damage or injury.

People driving should slow down, turn on their lights and keep a safe distance from other drivers.

If it is raining heavily and you cannot see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears.

Be careful driving on gravel roads as surfaces will be slippery and muddy and vehicles could become bogged

If the storm has caused damage to your home call the SES on 132 500.

In a life threatening situation call 000.
