Battletruk shows its considerate side

JACKIE COFFINSouth Western Times

They may be little more than a bunch of loud tattooed punks, but Battletruk are still kind of considerate.

“We’ve been around for a long time, we’re pretty good, but we like to play it down to give other bands a chance,” drummer Lonny Finn said.

“We don’t like to show the other bands up.”

The self-confessed jerks, originally from Perth, formed in 2005 and thrashed the eardrums of west coast music fans successfully until breaking up in 2011.

“We broke up, just because everyone else was doing it,” Finn said.

“We thought, ‘We need to get onto this hiatus rubbish’.

“It will make us more popular.”

Finn said he used the break to travel, spending time in Europe before moving to Margaret River, only to have his house burn down during the bushfires in 2011.

“After that I moved to Melbourne and realised the rest of the band was living there too, so we reformed and started playing again,” he said.

Interestingly, Finn said he didn’t see many hardcore shows while he was in Europe.

“Nah, I couldn’t do it, because I wasn’t playing — it bummed me out too much,” he said.

“However, I did see a lot of hip hop music while I was over there.

“It made me realise I’m an awful drummer and I need to get better.

“But that’s not going to happen, I think I’m worse than ever.”

Battletruk will play at the Prince of Wales Hotel on August 16 as part of the Annihilate Tenth Birthday weekender with 50 Lions, Outsiders Code and Beer Fridge.

“Huge shout out to Beer Fridge,” Finn said.

“We can’t wait to play with those guys again.”
