Bawdy Kev back for another bash
When Wilson spoke about his up coming tour ‘‘Kev’s Goin Bush’’, he was excited about the prospect of meeting some South West people and getting in touch with his grass roots.
‘‘Bloody oath I’m excited,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s great to keep in touch with my mates in the bush.’’
Wilson, who has been touring the world for the past six months with his ‘‘Excess all Areas’’ show, said nothing compared with performing at home and in the South West, he will entertaining fans at the Club Hotel in Collie tomorrow.
‘‘The show doesn’t differ from performing internationally but in saying that I never do the same show twice,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s great getting away from the Hollywood hype because in the bush you’re performing to real people.’’
Renowned for his bawdy ballads, Wilson said that in the early years, he was arrested for the songs he sang.
‘‘That just highlights the shift in culture,’’he said.
‘‘It shows that culture is in a constant state of flux being reviewed.’’
Wilson started songwriting 27 years ago to entertain his matesin Kalgoorlie and is still proud to beperforming.
‘‘Everything I have done I have done for my mates,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s great that I haven’t had a real job in 27 years.’’
Wilson’s ballads have become a part of Australian culture and he said the subjects he wrote about helped his career.
‘‘My career became popular by leap-frogging political correctness,’’ he said.
The comedian’s music has been preserved for future generations at the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra.
Last year, Wilson was nominated for Australian of the Year and besides being afather, he said it was one of the best things that had happened to him.
‘‘Just goes to show that doesn’t matter what your background you can still get recognised,’’ Wilson said.
‘‘It makes me proud to be an Australian.’’
