Eaton began their season on a high, defeating Marist by five wickets in a rain-shortened match at Forrest Park North on Saturday.

The Blues were sent into bat by the Beavers and got off to a horrible start, when English opener Chris Laker was out for a second ball duck thanks to the bowling of former Colts captain Clayton Caltsounis.

Marist never recovered, finishing with 6-120 off their 30 overs, with youngsters Harry Creasey (37) and Stanley Hunwick (39) putting up some resistance.

Eaton fast bowler Steve Barron had Sam Roots caught by Lachlan Golding and Caltsounis collected a second with the scalp of Ben Beauglehole for a single run.

When Lee Sorfleet fell to Arron Quartermaine for four, the Blues top order had lost four wickets for just 13 runs.

Hunwick and Creasey put on a 67-run partnership to give the Blues some life, but they were unable to post a competitive score.

The Beavers also made a shaky start with reigning BDCA cricketer-of-the-year James Hillery falling to Allan Utterson for 10 and Matt Foreman going for a duck.

But opener Don Seaman settled for the innings, scoring 50 including 11 boundaries to combine with Arron Quartermaine (44 not out) to get home in the 22nd over.

Rhys Herring was the pick of the bowlers for Marist, taking two wickets for just 15 runs, while Laker collected the scalp of Seaman thanks to a catch by Sorfleet.
