A big unknown species of shark was sighted near the Ridley Place boat ramp in the Leschenault Estuary in Australind and reported to water authorities on Tuesday.

It is not uncommon for skippers and anglers to spot sharks, most commonly bull sharks, in the estuary.

In 2010 a spate of shark sightings in the Collie River and estuary prompted the Department of Fisheries to issue a warning for water users to be cautious.

All shark sightings should be reported to Water Police on 9442 8600.
