A family "hub" in the heart of Gelorup will be even safer for residents thanks to new funding.

The Gelorup Community Management Committee was one of several beneficiaries of the Capel Shire Council's Minor Community Grants Scheme.

The committee applied for a grant to place a fence around the Gelorup Skate Park, after it was concerned with the safety of those using the park.

President Margaret Smith said poles surrounding the park were being pulled out so people could drive their cars into the area.

Mrs Smith said the money from the council would help with safety issues and protect "our kids".

The committee will receive about $2200 from the council for the new fence, but has also received a donation from Friends of the South West Community. The rest of the cost is being covered by the committee, according to Mrs Smith.

"The skatepark, BMX track and playground attract a lot of families here," she said.

"It's quite a hub and this money will help it thrive."

The playground adjacent to the skatepark is run by the Gelorup Playgroup, who also received a grant from the council. The group will get about $2800 for new play equipment for the playground.

President Natala King said the group was grateful for the funding and residents would benefit with the area becoming a whole family experience.

"It has everything, but there was space in the playground for something else," Mrs King said.

"The community gives so much to us, we thought it was time we gave something back."
