Australia's most well-known choir made famous by Qantas advertisements in the 1990s will visit Bunbury this month.

The National Boys Choir will bring its travelling choir of 42 boys to Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre on September 20 as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations.

The Melbourne-based choir will perform its first concert of the tour in Bunbury before it toured the State.

The National Boys Choir has travelled around the world, joined Andre Rieu on his Australian tour and performed at the Sydney Olympic and Melbourne Commonwealth games.

During its WA tour the choir will perform a mixture of classical and contemporary pieces, including the famous We Still Call Australia Home and songs from Fiddler on the Roof.

Founded by Kevin Casey in 1964 the choir is now directed by his son David Casey.

Casey said he was proud to be involved with the choir that had maintained a family atmosphere despite swelling to more than 200 members.

He said the choir had been formed in his parent’s living room and had stopped the choir “getting too large” to keep the familiar environment with the performers.

“We don’t want the boys to just be a number,” he said.

For some of the boys the WA tour was their first time away with the choir.

The performers would be billeted to stay in the homes of Men of Song and Bunbury Young Voices members who will also perform at the Bunbury concert.

He said the home-stay was part of the experience for the boys who were mostly from Melbourne.

“It is a fantastic experience in a completely different environment for them,” he said.
