With the wild weather upon us most anglers are tending to stay in the warmth of the house, but those diehard anglers braving the cold winds are having a win with plenty of land-based snapper and mulloway being caught.

All rock groynes from Mandurah to Augusta this time of year will produce snapper and mulloway, and same to beaches that have inshore reefs nearby.

Fresh baits such as squid heads, whole herring fillets or tailor, skippy and mullet are top baits for both species.

Large 6/0-10/0 hooks with a 60lb leader is the minimum as mulloway have good teeth and will cut through light lines.

Salmon are definitely still around with plenty being caught all along the local coast.

As always mulies and herring are the two stand out baits by far.

But lures are definitely a good choice such as Halco chrome slices, Smiling Jack’s minnows, Rapala x-raps, Richter plugs and Halco Roosta poppers.

The rivers are alive with bream and juvenile mulloway at the moment so getting out there and throwing a line in will definitely produce a fish or two.

Bream fight hard and will run for snags nine times out of 10.

For those chasing the sun and heading up north reports have come in of good fish including ruby snapper, mackerel, red emperor, rankin cod and plenty other desirable table and sports fish.

Large swells make rocks wet, slippery and dangerous so always watch the sea and never take your eye off the ocean.
