Bulldogs save best for finals

Bunbury coach Ryan Pitts has sent an ominous warning to the rest of the SWFL competition, revealing they are yet to field their best side.

Despite sitting second on the ladder – and just two points away from a minor premiership – the Bulldogs have been held back from their best football by injuries throughout the season.

Key players such as Jordan Adamson-Holmes, Marc Re, Corey McGuire and Jacob Williams have all had injury-interrupted seasons, testing the depth of the Bulldogs on numerous occasions.

Pitts said he would consider resting some players ahead of the finals to make sure they were fresh for a premiership tilt.

“We have to make sure we manage the list right, ” he said.

“So guys who do need a break or feel like they could use a breather know there is an opportunity there.

“But going into the finals you don’t want to flirt with your form too much so it has been a good situation for us to have a couple of away games and then a tough game against Eaton.”

The Bunbury side has a luxury not many other teams possess, with a number of their key players being very versatile and able to play at either ends of the ground.

Pitts said depending on the opposition team and their structure, his side was able to adapt and he had the luxury of repositioning players.

“We have to make sure we get our structure right in every given game. It depends on the opposition and how they set up, ” he said.

“We have to make sure we are versatile, we are lucky that the likes of Jordy (Adamson-Holmes), Aiden Parker and Marc Re can play back.

“We have a fair bit of flexibility which is probably the great thing about our team at the moment.”

This week Bunbury travel to Collie to take on the Eagles.

Despite the Eagles being out of the finals race, Pitts is not taking the game lightly.

“Every side goes out there with the same mindset to look at how to limit the opposition’s good players, ” he said.

“We will put a lot of pressure on their players to make sure their standout players don’t get as much opportunities as they would like.

“I think we have the cattle to cover them.”
