Bunbury citizens of the year announced

Long-time music teacher Ian Mills was named Bunbury’s Citizen of the Year at the city’s Australia Day morning celebrations.

Mr Mills also received the Premier’s Australia Day active citizenship award for his ongoing support and volunteering to a range of choirs around the South West, including a number of schools.

Bunbury’s youth mayor Sean Smith was given the active citizenship award for people under 25.

Mr Smith was recognised for his commitment to Bunbury’s youth advisory council and the leadership he has shown across various youth projects.

The other active citizenship award given out went to Hands Up 4 Kids, who were also the council’s community group or event of the year.

Their work in helping to improve students’ reading skills by supplying schools with volunteers to help selected students was acknowledged.

Carey Park Scout Group won the Wilcox Brown Perpetual Trophy for outstanding achievement by a volunteer organisation.

Heritage awards were given to Clinton Long Project Management and Annabel Wills Architecture for the Bunbury war memorial’s restoration and to Peter Drosdowsky for the restoration and conservation of two houses on Ednie Street.

A citizenship ceremony, including new Australian citizens from countries as diverse as Pakistan, Iran, Myanmar (Burma) and Israel was also held.
